A Toaster Built To Last A Lifetime

For many households, the toaster is one of the hardest working appliances in the kitchen. It handles breakfast rushes, quick snacks and everything from crumpets to thick-cut sourdough. Yet most models on shop shelves are built to a price, not to last. That is where Dualit takes a different approach.

Founded in 1946, the British company has spent more than 80 years refining a single idea: build a premium toaster that delivers consistent results and survives heavy daily use. Its NewGen Classic Toaster range, available in two and four slice versions, reflects that philosophy. Each unit is hand-built in the UK, with the assembler’s name stamped on the base, and housed in a solid stainless-steel body with a distinctive retro-inspired design.

The most important feature sits inside. Dualit’s proprietary ProHeat elements are designed to produce even radiant heat rather than the hot-spot wires found in many cheaper machines. In practice, that means fewer burnt corners and fewer pale patches. During testing with standard sliced bread, fruit loaf and thicker artisan pieces, browning proved balanced and predictable. Extra wide slots accommodate bulkier items, while a bagel setting and defrost function add flexibility.

Unlike many modern toasters, there is no automatic pop-up. Instead, a mechanical timer switches the heating elements off once the selected time is reached. A manual ejector lever allows users to check progress mid-cycle and lift smaller items clear of the slots without burning fingers. The approach feels deliberately simple and gives a greater sense of control over browning.

Durability is central to the design. Dualit builds these toasters to be fully repairable, with replacement parts readily available. That stands in contrast to mass-produced appliances that are often discarded when a single component fails. Adjustable rear feet improve stability on the bench, and a removable crumb tray makes cleaning straightforward.

Visually, the Classic Toaster is intended to be seen rather than hidden away. Finishes range from polished steel to bold colours, turning a functional appliance into a countertop feature.

Dualit’s appeal lies less in flashy technology and more in longevity and consistency. In a market dominated by disposable gadgets, it offers an alternative built around craftsmanship, serviceability and reliable toast.
